Repair solid wood flooring successfully
Solid wood is considered to be the most vigorous flooring solutions but with the passage of time it will need some repair and maintenance in order to keep it in its original form and appearance. If your floor has some minor but noticeable flaws and you are thinking of repairing it then you should try it with an inexpensive method.
Flaws of the floor can be the results of dragging, burns (usually occurs in kitchen), marks of heels and discoloration. All these kinds of flaws and marks can be reduced and vanished by having a little knowledge and your determination.
It would be the best approach that you have some know how about DIY (don’t make the care and repair of your wood flooring your first attempt at carpentry!). You are going to need tools that are most probably available in your toolbox and these are hammer, chisel, nails, scraper, sanding paper, wood filler and flat edged knife (Stanley). If you might require anything else then it will be easily available at any DIY store at inexpensive rates.
Minor repairs you can do yourself: You can conceal the scratch lines occurred by children’s toys or pets’ claws or nails very easily by using a matching color putty crayon with your floor and apply it on those lines. Apply it softly and then rub in with a help of soft lint-free cloth. Repeat this step as much as it is required until it vanishes. Remember that this is an inexpensive solution but not a permanent one. The scratch lines are likely to get visible again. Though it is a temporary solution but it can make your floor look good for couple of months ahead.
You can make the small spot burns disappear with the help of a flat bladed knife along with the piece of steel wool dipped in plain water. Softly rub the marks and use the knife for crusty edges. After removing it completely you can give it a fine look by sanding that area with the finest grade of sand paper and then you can apply proper finishing so that it will look similar to the rest of the room. Then apply polish lightly with the help of a duster when the area gets completely dried.
If your floor has some uneven or rotted planks then you need to replace or reposition it. You can do this with a plank that closely matches the floor. The effected board can be removed by using jimmy bar and chisel. First you have to drill holes along the damaged section and then you can lift the plank. It might take some time as it is a slow process but it is needed to be done with complete attention and focus in order to avoid the damage to the surrounding planks.
Now you can remove it and then cut and fit the new plank considering the required size after carefully examining the area. When the gap gets filled then hold in place with wood adhesive and nails (usually 2” ring shank) and then you are done with your job.
If the floor got risen or warped in areas then you can fix it by wetting the wood and then putting a heavy item on the warped area (cinder block or stone works best). Keep the weight in that place for two or three days before moving. This will make it vanished if the warp is small. But if the warp is more than that, then you have to replace the board by removing the warped one.
